No rain today so it was time to get out the lawnmower. How satisfying it is to see a stripey lawn.

What is going on with the weather?

What a barmy weather we are having!

This year I got all excited at the news of having access to a piece land to grow vegetables, so started growing courgettes from seeds and lots more green peppers. But this cold and rainy spring is getting in the way of growth and planting...

Last year this time I had planted my green peppers in big troughs and they were in full swing, this year they are only 10cm long and would stand a chance in night time temps of below 5 degrees!

Please gods give us some warmth and sunshine so the plants start to get strong and then one could grow his own veg once again.

12 May 2012 : Veg goes in, plot tidied and Bees a buzzing

The Secret Garden has not seen much activity lately, Tracey has been up and put a few things in but in the main we have been waiting for the risk of frost to go.

Well today was warm and sunny and while all frost risk has not gone we decided it needed planting and a good tidy. Boy did it need it the grass was huge and weeds everywhere.

Out came the strimmer and I started whacking the grass while Tracey weeded the main bed. Once the edges and paths were back in shape i joined the weeding clearing.

After an hour or so the garden once again looked loved and so the planting began.

The Hazel wig wams were in place so these are now planted with runner beans and Austrian Beans. A row of peas went in next to a row of beetroot and a row of spring onions.

There are already two rows of Broad beans in , but another two were added. Celeriac plants were put in next to some Giant Garlic. Finally, three more rows of spuds joined the six already in the ground.

So in the ground we now have:

7 rows of three types of spuds

8 rows of 3 types of onions

4 rows of Broad Beans

1 row of Beetroot

1 row of Spring onion

1 row and 1 wigwam of peas

5 wigwams of Runner beans

1 wigwam of Austrian Beans

1 plot of Jerusalem Artichokes

2 Giant Garlics

1 row of Celeriac

1 poly tunnel of Courgettes and Marrows

lots of Rasberries, Joster Berries, and Gooseberrries

1 bush of Blue berries

lots of hanging baskets of strawberries

2 Damson trees

2 Apple trees

Chicory, Horse radish, mint, borrage & comfry

We still have more to go in , but the day was so nice we headed for a walk on the beach with the dogs :)

The bees have been a bit slow to rebuild after the Winter and the recent cold, damp weather hasn't helped. Today though hive two was doing really well with lots of flying bees at the entrance. Hive one though was still slow, and is a bit of a worry, not many flying bees at the entrance, but more than last week.

All we can do now though is leave them in peace and hope they manage to grow.

Fascination of Plants

Plant science isn't just GMO - all over the country next week events are taking place to illuminate all the different forms that plant science takes; forestry, agriculture, renewable resources, education, art etc.

Events in the UK are listed here http://www.plantday12.eu/uk.htm

If you are in Kent come and join me on a tour round one of Kent's best orchid sites looking at orchids and other plants; current research on them, how they are used and how they rely on land management for their habitat.

What I want is a cheap/free greenhouse (someones old one will do) around 6x6 or 6x8 but beggers cannot be choosers.

We secured a small allotment plot

Happily we (3 of us sharing) have secured a small plot 94ft x 13ft, with a shed full of character.

The plot was in good condition with only short weeds, which we hoe'd off, then turned the soils a full spade depth. The soil looks to be in good condition thanks to the previous occupier. We have the 1st earlies planted and then attempted to sow seeds direct into the ground and are waiting to see if any survived the last snow we got. We are waiting for T&M to send our main crop of spuds and time is moving along as they will need chitted as well before they go in.

We are erecting a small polytunnel for tomatoes and peppers, plus we can raise spring seedlings in there as well. Lots to learn or recall from our youth.

Everyone very helpful and friendly, loads of advice, and offers of a few veg plants. Great site, and thankfully we managed to get on there
