Windowsill Herbs

silvasedai Living in a back to back, terraced house its hard to find space for the greens, but the windowsill boxes are just beginning to show signs of life. The Basil plants are thriving (shop bought), and the loose leaf Lettuce seedlings are getting on to be an inch high. The thyme and marjoram are starting to peek out at the world, and the coriander is showing signs of life. Still waiting for the...

Big Brassicas!

orinoco77 Today I suggested that instead of buying coleslaw we make our own.  Until this year, my partner has not eaten coleslaw but has always made a huge quantity, the problem being that I then had to eat it all.  This year she has decided that she does like coleslaw and so it is once more practical to make it, after all the cabbage can also be used for Sunday dinner etc. So with this in mind...

Super - but limited - veg

orinoco77 This weekend I had both the first broccoli head and the first lettuce head and what a size they both were.  Each was comfortably bigger than my own head, so a lot of healthy eating to be done over the next few days. I have heard that you can get additional heads off the broccoli so I need to look up how to do that. Tomatoes are slowly growing this year - only one almost ready tomato and not...

My First Blog

mystichippie This is the first year that I have been growing my own vegetables that I really feel at one with my garden, I come home from a hard day at work and only begin to start feeling more human again when I have had my bum in the air weeding for about an hour. I think my friends started thinking I was a garden bore as thats all I ever talk about, thats until I started sharing my produce with them! The...

May the cucumber revolution commence!

orinoco77 Ok, first time for writing a blog so I don't even know if anyone will read it.  In case anyone is, though, here we go! If you have seen my profile, and the site has updated it correctly (it keeps removing the updates), then you will see that I have a small area I grow on in my garden.  I have a walk in plastic greenhouse, a 4 shelf greenhouse and two areas for growing - one for...

If in Drought

lucy-landshare Water. After weeks of waiting patiently, the rain has finally arrived. And boy is there a lot of it. Landsharers have been bemoaning the lack of rain over the last couple of months, and some have been the subject of the dreaded hosepipe ban. Ideally a garden needs about an inch of water a week, so if we’re going to be short again, some planning is clearly required. On Eigg, we’re...

Landshare at The Big Lunch

editor The River Cottage recipes picked out by Hugh Fearnley-Whittingstall for The Big Lunch went down a treat today at our local Big Lunch event at Battlefield Community Gardens in Glasgow. Heidi and I took some of the dishes along to the event, which was organised by Abi and other folk from Urban Roots. The Big Lunch is a UK-wide event held annually, and organised by the Eden Project. Communities are...

Gluts and Gongs

lucy-landshare The Landshare Team are chuffed and basking in the reflective glory of Hugh winning Campaigner of the Year in the 2010 Observer Ethical Awards for his work on Landshare.  The Grassroots category winner was Abundance. Hugh met Abundance last year, but I have to admit I’d not come across them before.  Their growing grassroots project has teams of volunteers across the UK...

Using old wooden guttering for a window box!

funkyoid I have two wooden gutters in my front garden after they came crashing down in winter due  snow, replaced them with plastic, but couldnt throw them away! Been racking my brains as what I could do with them and then today hey presto - attach to garden wall on brackets to make window sill boxes. Small I know but think herbs would be fine in them as well as lettuce maybe... so all I need now is...
