Digging to ACDC!

vixx I used to be all about the rock n roll and used to be a guitarist in a heavy rock band and now find myself desperate for a piece of land to call my own, reading up on potato growing and actually considering keeping chickens?!! Insane? maybe but I figure as long as I can find some black studded wellies and a good cd player I should be on a roll! I do love lots of different hobbies and having...

Brewing

meltootyfruityanie After spending a week filling our fridge and freezer with home cooked Free Range Chicken meals from pie to coronation chicken, Jason checked on his Woodford's Wherry that is currently brewing away in his 'Man' room. For his 26th Birthday I decided that i was bored of the talk and that it was about time he actually started to brew his own - and so he got the kit a few days early and has been...

Almost 1 year on and still no joy

andre88uk Well its a shame this site hasnt really caught on in Norfolk. one of the major farming locations in the UK. (maybe as the land is still actual farms). Near to me we have 9.18km away 20 acre site for sub-division - Looking for rent. The rest are all nearly 1 year old listings and they dont give you any responses. I just want to find a small piece of land or some chickens, ducks, turkeys and some...

Simple beginnings and high hopes!

mrbeeactive How very exciting, my very first blog ever! I had a brainwave of creating a web site for sharing ideas on self sufficiency and using blogs to share ideas, and then found that the wheel (this website) had already been invented! My ultimate dream is to live off the land on a one or two acre site with vegetables, chickens (laying and tasty eating ones), a goat or cow, wonderful ground enriching...

chickens, red mites and garlic

molesronnies we kept getting red mite in our hens and none of the powders and potions seemed to work so I tried garlic powder -you can buy buckets of it for horses, mixed it in their feed and they seemed to really llike it and the redmites leave them alone as long as we keep it up. I'd got the garlic to mix in the ponies and cows feed to deter biting flies -apparently it works but they wont eat it!...

The Chickens are loving the compost heap...

roselodge-exmouth The pupils from the Beacon School came for their bi-weekly vegetable growing day today. As usual they did a great job, making a new compost heap and turning the compost from the existing bin into the new bin. More digging and seeding of course and the vege garden is begininning to look quite lush after all the recent rain. For a treat, we let our chickens to free...

Progress update - been a while!!

aothen75 Well what a busy time we have all had! In such a short time we have gone from 8 strips of deep ploughed land to 4 strips of arable soil and planted up with a good selection of vegetables. It all kicked off with tonnes of very old, well-rotted stable manure being ferried across 2 paddocks wheelbarrow by wheelbarrow and then trailer load by trailer load to the beds. This was then followed by an...

Wicked Wild Garlic & Roast Chicken!

adam1111 Wild Garlic (Allium arsinum) or “Ramsons” are a fabulous, foraged addition to many home cooked recipes. The wild garlic, a woodland plant, has just recently been in full flower and filling the woodlands with that marvellous garlicky smell. They’re a shade tolerant woodland plant, companion to flowering bluebells and easily recognisable for their broad green leaves, white flower...
