Edinburgh Community Backgreens Association is a community enterprise created to inspire and support residents to regenerate tenement backgreens into community greenspaces which build a sense of neighbourhood and improve the environmental sustainability of the households that live around them. Just over half of Edinburgh households live in tenements. Tenement backgreens range widely, some are urban oases, many others are just a square of grass with some drying poles, and the worst are inaccessible jungles. We believe that backgreens can offer much more, they can be diverse beautiful greenspaces which provide a place for relaxation and recreation, places for growing food and meeting neighbours. By linking neighbouring backgreens, we can create 'community backgreens', which share common facilities like tool sheds or play facilities for children. ECBA was set up to support residents to create community backgreens. On this site you will find information about the sites we already work at, how to set up a community backgreen, and the services we provide to tenement households to enrich and maintain their backgreens.
I'm a first time garden owner and not really sure where to start. My husband and I are pretty busy with our work, and I travel a lot so our garden is currently bigger than we need or can manage ourselves. We're keen to grow some fruit and vege but aim to start small. I work in overseas development and my husband works in renewable energy. We both love the mountains.
We have recently moved into a property with a medium sized walled garden that was clearly once loved but has gone to seed. We intend to cultivate part of it but there is far more than we can handle on our own. We would like to offer a plot of around 12m by 10m for vegetable growing. The area was previously a flower garden with some shrubs. Access to the garden can be arranged through a side gate. There is plenty of shed space and rain water butts.

I have a reasonably large city garden with space to grow fruit, veg and lots of flowers. I am a complete garden "greenie" who has very little time to get to grips with gardening and the garden is going wild! So, I am looking for help, advice and moral support to deal with the jungle that has developed through lack of time and care! If you can help, then please let me know......thanks.
I have a largish city garden suitable for fruit, flowers and veg. It has been somewhat neglected due to lack of interest and lack of time but has been very productive in the past. I will be trying to bring it back under control but have only just moved so the house has priority right now.....the weeds are loving it!

Hello,
My name is Julia, my partner and I have just moved to our new house, it has a sizeable garden, and i dream of starting my 'allotment' or veg garden. I would be looking for a or a couple helpers, who could help me start and maintain the veg garden. I love cooking and love gardening, but i have rather little experience in the latter. It is a lot of work as the land needs to be prepared first, but that then gives us blank canvas to start. There is a garden shed already, and the foundations to put a glass house. It goes without saying that we would obviously share the produce.
Ho yes one more thing, we have a dog, so please do only contact me if you like dogs.
PS: am a little lost my yards, so size is approximate.

We have a well established garden producing lots of fruit and veg, all organically. Too much to list But there's now no one to look after it. So we would be open to an arrangement where someone with the time and skills works it in exchange for us getting some of the produce. It is currently in quite good order and we would like to see that continue so reliability is important. We would also prefer a potentially long term relationship. Experienced growers only please.

Hi I'm on the waiting list for a a half-plot council allotment but the waiting lists are long. I'm looking for a small plot of land I could grow fruit and veg (and flowers) on, within reasonable walking/cycling distance of the Royal Commonwealth Pool. I work full time so don't have time for anything too large. Of course, I would share harvests with the land-sharer. I have very little gardening experience, but several experts to ask guidance from. Thanks very much for reading my listing.

i would like to find a patch of land that either a group of friends and family and i could grow veg;flowers, fruit (or simply grow a meadow of wild flowers) etc on OR share a garden with someone, which i could enjoy the pleasures of sitting in;eating outdoors and possibly my son could play in;though he's growing up fast and hasn't had this benefit.i used to have an allottment but have spondyloliicthesis of the spine so now i cannot dig or bend or kneel so the solitary joy of working on the land is lost to me.I live in a flat and sometimes can't walk much at all so this opportunity would mean a lot and i would contribute as much as i could in any way possible. All offers considered.thanks.

I am a keen gardener but dont have the space for vegetables having a small walled garden in the city centre. I would be delighted if someone needs help with a large garden that maybe has become too overgrown for them if I could take a space for fruit and veg that we can share!
I am looking for some space to grow vegetables and if possible some soft fruit. I am a keen gardener but dont have room in my small walled garden in the city centre - I am happy to share the produce and chutneys produced!

I'm looking for a small area in or around Edinburgh to grow veg. This is my first attempt at doing anything like this but I'm ready to give it a go. I live in the city centre at the moment and my back green is too small and communal to grow anything, so if anyone has a small areas they are not using I would be up for having a look.

Hi my name is Graham, I am a keen grow my own grow gardener with a few years under my belt. My last couple of flats had restrictions on what i could do in them and I have just moved into a new flat which unfortunately is the same !! dam red tape !! I love to watch and nurture wildlife and have had some great experience in the last couple of years on both large and small scale. Im looking for something close to me that I can come and tend, and also help with other works that are needed. Im not afraid of hard work :) I have attached a couple of images of some of what I have done most recently Please get intouch as with your land and my motivation to grown my own we could create something that looks and tastes great :) Thanks for reading
I'm a fun, friendly, young guy looking to grow my own fruit and veg. his has been an interest of mine for sometime and I would now like to take this hobby to the next sttage.
I grew up helping my father in his garden which was (and still is) full of staple vegetables such as potatoes, onions, leeks, carrots, peas and beans etc, plus a 30 foot greenhouse filled with bedding plants in the spring and tomatoes in the summer. I worked as a self-employed gardener for 7 years down in Yorkshire from 2003 and, after moving up to Edinburgh I also worked as a gardener in 2011. The flat in which I am staying though, unfortunately has no available vegetable growing area in the garden, which belongs to my landlord - it is solely a flower garden. I am looking for the opportunity to be able to help either get an overgrown garden back into a fit state to be able to grow veg and maybe fruit, or to help someone with their established garden in return for some veg etc. I have a basic selection of my own hand tools and a chainsaw, (with a licence), plus plenty of free time and energy.
Edinburgh Garden Partners matches people who have land to spare, with people who want to garden. We currently have a project covering the Gilmerton area, and hope to soon have funding to cover Leith and adjacent areas of North Edinburgh. We are keen to support elderly and disabled garden owners to take part in Landsharing. Find out more about us at: www.edinburghgardenpartners.org.uk
I like growing veggies and have had some success in the past but haven't much time at the moment, hopefully soon..! I value self sufficiency, hands on skills, and sharing. I have some pepper plants I've nurtured in my window which are loooking a little sad but will be much happier when they move to a sunnier spot!
