apple tree sapling problem

At our school 3 fruit trees were planted last summer. They are very small. The apple tree is now dead and it is notable that the bark is removed at the base leaving a very smooth woodlike stem. The pear tree next to it is alive and flourishing at present with leaves for spring, but the bark is coming away from the stem also and I am concerned it will go the same way as the apple tree. My first thought is that it is rabbits, but there are not many rabbits on our school field and the damage is very smooth and I thought an animal chewing it would make it jagged and torn in appearance. The trees have not been planted in a very good position and the grass is tall and damp and I wondered if this could be the problem. Please help.

Harlow Allotments

Hello!

I'm currently on the waiting list for Izzard, Dudley Terrace and Fuller allotments. I've been on the list for exactly a year next month!

Anyone else waiting or recently been given a plot on these allotments? If so, how long did u wait for?

Many thanks,

Mike.

Clerodendrum

I bought some seeds for "Clerodendron trichotomum" a couple of years ago, tried to grow some myself and gave some to my grandad (who can get almost anything to grow successfully) but neither of us could get them to germinate. Does anybody have any tips on how to grow them? We followed the instructions on the packet to the letter but nothing happened.

asparagus that's too small

A couple of weeks ago I posted a question about the size of my asparagus and only got one vague reply. Does anyone know why my asparagus isn't "supermarket" size? I grew my asparagus from seed about 3 years ago now. They're in pots the size of buckets. Is there something I'm doing wrong?
